While the California wildfires continue to rage on, the industry is providing a distraction from the devastation with some positive news: The 2025 Oscar nominations are here. This year was was a banner year for cinema between Wicked's record-breaking box office run to the renaissance of iconic stars like Pamela Anderson and Demi Moore.

Now, the 2025 awards season—which was filled with adorable couple moments, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo tears, and opulent red carpet fashion—will culminate in the prestigious awards ceremony on March 2, when Hollywood's best and brightest will dress to the nines to receive the industry's most coveted award.

After the original nominations announcement was postponed amid the ongoing fires, Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott shared the highly anticipated list of nominees on Thursday, January 23. Among those recognized are Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande for their roles in Wicked, Demi Moore for The Substance, Timothée Chalamet for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez. Karla Sofia Gascon also makes history as the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Oscar for her role in Emilia Pérez. Netflix's musical also received the most nominations with 13 total while Wicked and The Brutalist scored the second most with 10 each.

The Oscar nominations come after the Golden Globes saw Netflix's Emilia Pérez take home four wins, including Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña's performance and Best Motion Picture—Comedy or Musical. Shortly after the Globes, the 2025 SAG Awards nominees were announced with Wicked scoring the most nods with five nominations. Meaning, that the Oscars, which will take place on March 2, 2025 and air live on ABC, is anybody's game.
