One of the perks of being a Country Living editor? New music from Nashville landing in my inbox. It’s especially appreciated at Christmastime because, as much as we love our tried-and-true holiday playlist, we all know we occasionally need to shake up the snow globe, so to speak. So, I bring you a festive mix of a dozen brand-new Christmas songs to unwrap this year, the grand majority of them country.
From long-beloved artists, like Little Big Town, to rising stars, you’ll find lots a new tracks to rock around the Christmas tree to (but take note: Brenda Lee’s 1958 hit “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is still a must).
Bonus: Along with 12 original songs, you’ll find new versions of classics too. In fact, there are not one but two new versions of “White Christmas” on mentioned here—one by Chapel Hart featuring Rissi Palmer and another JD Clayton. Dare I say you might find a new favorite version? Happy holidays—and happy listening.
More Christmas fun:
Little Big Town The Christmas Record (5 Original Songs)
Get in the spirit with five original Christmas songs from Little Big Town’s The Christmas Record, including “Glow,” “Christmas Night With You,” “Believe in Christmas,” “Evergreen,” and “Holiday” (that last one will make you get up and dance).
The album includes classic covers too: Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December,” Stevie Wonder’s “Someday At Christmas,” and—my personal favorite—“Christmas Time Is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas.
PS—Don't miss the video for “Glow” for a little holiday armchair traveling. The band filmed it in the breathtaking town of Gstaad, Switzerland.
Chapel Hart’s Hartfelt Family Christmas (4 Original Songs)
This album from AGT favorites—and America’s Sweethearts—Chapel Hart is a must-listen. Sisters Danica and Devynn Hart and cousin Trea Swindle have four brand-new holiday tracks for you. It’s hard to choose, but my favorite of the original songs is the title track “Hartfelt Family Christmas,” featuring Gretchen Wilson, which gives us some insight into the holidays with the trio’s famously large family in Mississippi. Rounding out the original songs are “That Time Of Year” with Darius Rucker, “Come On Santa (Ready For Christmas),” and “Christmas Day” about Mary, featuring The Isaacs.
Chapel Hart also serves up many of your Christmas favorites on the album, including collaborations with Vince Gill (“Silver Bells”), Jason Crabb (“Spirit of Christmas”—the Ray Charles standard), and Rissi Palmer (“White Christmas”).
“Your Favorite Christmas Song” by JD Clayton
When writing and recording “Your Favorite Christmas Song,” Arkansas-based singer-songwriter JD Clayton aimed for a song “that sounds like something heard on your local bar jukebox.” I must say, mission accomplished! Listen to this one after the kids go to bed with a Christmas cocktail (or mocktail) in your hand. While you’re at it, give JD’s version of “White Christmas” a listen too.
“Your Angel” by Kassi Ashton
Another one for late-night when the Christmas party is winding down, “Your Angel” is a track from emerging artist Kassi Ashton (Made From The Dirt, 2024). This vulnerable original explores the loneliness that the holidays sometimes bring.
New Take on a Classic: “Please Come Home for Christmas” by Kaley Green
Don’t miss this Nashville artist Kaley Green’s soulful new rendition of “Please Come Home for Christmas,” the blues holiday classic first recorded by Charles Brown in 1960.
New Take on a Classic: “Christmas Tears” by Angel White
Here’s a new take on Freddie King’s 1961 classic “Christmas Tears” for you holiday listening pleasure. Rising country star and fifth-generation Texan Angel White, who released his six-song EP Ghost of the West: Volume I earlier this year,
New Take on a Classic: “Do You Hear What I Hear?” by Josh Groban and The War And Treaty
Does it get any better than superstar Josh Groban teaming up with gospel-inspired country duo The War And Treaty for a rendition of a 1962 holiday classic? Don’t think so.
On another holiday note: The special “Josh Groban and Friends Go Home for the Holidays” airs on CBS on December 20, 2024, at 9:00 pm ET/PT. Tune in!
