How to buy a flattering bikini

1. Get your size right

Don’t feel like you have to squeeze into a 10 top because you’re a 10 bottom. Bikini labels, like Seafolly and Jets, sell separates because a lot of women are sized differently on the top and bottom.

2. Mix it up

Get more wear out of two bikinis by mixing them up. Buying prints? Smaller patterns are more flattering if you have any bulges.

3. Do a 360

Changeroom 101: check every angle – sit, stand, walk, jump, and make sure your bikini is secure and comfortable. There’s nothing more annoying than having to constantly adjust your bikini every time you wear it – or even worse, for it to fall off when you’re mid-wave. And remember, a cossie’s only going to get less supportive with age as the material and elastic become weaker. If possible, try to look at yourself in a room with fairly natural lighting as change room lighting can be misleading.

4. Wear a G-string

Wear a flesh-coloured G-string when bikini shopping to get a realistic idea of how the costume fits and how much of your bum will be visible, without tucking your undies under the cossie.

5. Shop with friends

Or, snap a picture on your mobile and send it to a trusted source.

6. Consider tan lines

There are now lots of tops that come with convertible straps that you can take off or switch around when you want to.

7. Find the perfect shape

Watch out for new season trends that might look great on the poster girl but not so on your body – always keep in mind the most flattering style for your shape]. This season’s boy legs are great for athletic and petite frames as they add curve and shape to your bum. If you’re short-legged, though, steer clear as they’ll shorten them even more. Naturally curvy? Full briefs are the best choice. If you’re bottom heavy, darker-coloured briefs are always more flattering.

8. Choose flattering colours

If you like neutrals and have olive skin, try wearing this season’s metallic, light and white tones. If you’re on the paler side, opt for darker neutral tones like chocolate rather than tan. Darker neutral tones are more flattering than stark black.

9. Beware of details

Things like ruching and bows grab attention, so make sure they’re in a spot you want to draw eyes to.
