St John’s wort is great for depression, but it can reduce the effectiveness of the Pill and cause breakthrough bleeding, says Prevention’s complementary-medicine expert Marc Cohen, PhD.

Anticoagulants + Vitamin E

High doses of vitamin E may enhance anti-coagulant effects in the blood, which can cause bruising and bleeding if you take them with a drug such as warfarin, warns Cohen.

High-blood-pressure medication + Licorice

Licorice supplements have anti-inflammatory properties, but high doses can counteract blood-pressure-lowering meds, says pharmacist and naturopath Lesley Braun, PhD.
