Early detection saves lives, so check your breasts.

I’m passionate about the importance of breast cancer awareness. My whole world turned upside-down last year when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It sounds like a cliché, but although Australian women have a one in eight risk of developing cancer, never in my wildest dreams did I think it would happen to me. I have not family history of it and had mammograms, so it came as a shock.

Stop sweating the small stuff.

Since breast cancer, I’ve stopped sweating the small stuff. While I didn’t need to have chemotherapy, I did undergo a course of radiotherapy, which wasn’t much fun, but I maintained my usual routine to keep my spirits up. In fact, I’d usually walk to and from appointments to stay busy. I didn’t allow myself to think about the negatives. Maintaining a positive attitude is crucial to my health: it’s always been my approach to life and I wasn’t about to change it!

Take a blood test and have regular check-ups.

A blood test revealed I was lacking in vitamin D, so I take supplements daily now. It was quite startling to be honest: I love the outdoors – especially playing golf – and am often in the sun, so I never thought I’d be at risk. It proves it’s always good to talk with your doctor.

Looking good makes a difference.

In addition to being the breast cancer ambassador for Avon – who has raised more than $780 million for breast cancer – I’m passionate about my work with Look Good... Feel Better. It’s a brilliant organisation that teaches cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer, including hair loss and skin changes. When you have a bit of make-up on and you’re looking good, it is easier to face the world.

Stick to a fitness routine you love.

Since my diagnosis and treatment, most things in my life have remained the same. I’ve always been relatively fit, especially after my former Dancing with the Stars partner Carmelo Pizzino danced my tushie off last year! Carmelo put together a simple regimen with weights and an exercise bike that I do whenever I can. Thanks to his encouragement and guidance I’ve gone from a size 12-14 to an 8-10 – and I absolutely love my new wardrobe. That’s motivation to keep the weight off!

Eat clean.

I’ve reduced my portion sizes and increased my protein intake. I eat healthy breakfasts and have also cut down on pasta and bread. I’m feeling great and, after everything I’ve been through in the last 12 months, it’s so nice to know I have another great year ahead.
