Oscar-winning actress Celeste Holm has died

Celeste Holm, a Broadway star who went on to win an Academy Award for her role in Gentleman's Agreement, passed away at the age of 95 on Sunday.

Holm's great-niece Amy Phillips told the Associated Press that actress, who died in her New York apartment:

"I think she wanted to be here, in her home, among her things, with people who loved her."

According to the AP, Holm was hospitalised two weeks prior with dehydration after a fire in Robert De Niro's apartment, located in the same building.

She went home to spend her last days with her husband, Frank Basile, as well as friends and family members.

Holm first made it big on Broadway in the musical Oklahoma! in 1943.

Her success on Broadway landed her a contract with 20th Century Fox, and she went on to become a film star.

She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1947 film Gentleman's Agreement, alongside Gregory Peck.

During her long career, she starred in a number of other films, including All About Eve, starring Bette Davis, and High Society, starring Frank Sinatra.

Holm was married five times and is survived by two sons and three grandchildren.
