Serena Williams First Woman In 32 Years to Win SI's Sportsperson of The Year

Serena Williams has been named Sports Illustrated's 2015 sportsperson of the year, becoming only the third individual woman to take out the title.

The 34-year-old, who battled numerous injuries this year but still went on to win 53 of 56 matches this year and taking out three of tennis' four grand slams for the year.

"Serena has made a very strong case as not only the greatest tennis player of her generation but of all time, and after the string of performances she put together in 2015, she is one of the most dominant athletes playing today," said Sports Illustrated (SI) Group Editor Paul Fichtenbaum.

Serena, who covers the new issue dressed in a black lace body suit as she drapes her long limbs over a golden throne, took to Instagram to share the news.

"For @sportsillustrated to recognise my hard work, my dedication, and my sheer determination gives me hope to continue on and do better," she said. "As I always say, it takes a village -- not just one person. This is not just an accomplishment for me, but for my whole team and all my fans. I am beyond honoured.”

It has been 32 years since a woman was recognised by the publication as an individual, with track star Mary Decker taking it out in 1983.
