According to the findings, which were commissioned by seekingarrangement.com, you can consider yourself a “grown-up” if you’re financially independent, actively seek a husband or wife as opposed to a girlfriend or boyfriend, and put your career ahead of your sex life.
Other top signs you’re headed for adulthood reportedly include donning a coat on a night out and wearing comfortable shoes instead of 5-inch heels (though we beg to differ on this last point).
Music taste was also reportedly indicative of maturity, with the survey revealing people start listening to talkback radio in their late 20s, with most therefore unable to name the number one most popular song on the charts.
Lastly, having a view on politics, taking trips to the local tip, and washing up immediately after eating were also considered key “adult” behaviours.
Presenter Claire Craig, 27, said the results simply reflect people’s shift in attitude during their mid to late 20s. “I remember when I was kid always being asked: ‘What are you going to do when you grow up?’. I always used to wonder, ‘At what age are you grown up?’” There are all sorts of reasons which show we are grown up and they all really point to us wanting more stability and less chaos in our lives.”
According to a separate study by Skipton, the findings simply reflect the current economic climate, with 44 per cent of respondents claiming money woes have made it difficult to become financially independent.
"The inability to complete rites of passage as basic as standing on their own feet financially, and owning their own home, is effectively infantilising people and leaving us with a generation of who remain teenagers into their late 20s,” said spokesperson Tracy Fletcher.
