7-year-old receives liposuction voucher for Christmas
All most children want for Christmas is the latest toy. But for seven-year-old UK girl Poppy Burge, her mum gave her a voucher for liposuction that cost over $10 000.
This accompanied other presents that included make-up, hair extensions and a spray tan.
Sarah Burge, Poppy’s mother who is known as the “Human Barbie”, defended her gift in an interview with UK tabloid Closer, saying it’s what her daughter wants.
"She asks for surgery all the time. She wants to look good and liposuction is one of those procedures that will always come in handy,” she said.
It’s not the first time that Sarah Burge has found herself amongst controversial headlines. In 2010, she confessed to teaching her then six-year-old daughter to pole dance.
Poppy also received a $9 000 breast enlargement voucher from her mother to redeem if she chose to at 16. The voucher was a part of Poppy’s $18 000 ‘exotic pamper party’, which involved Poppy and her seven friends receiving manicures, pedicures and makeovers, dressing up with fake tattoos, drinking pretend champagne and eating a cake that cost nearly $400.
“Poppy isn’t interested in bouncy castles or pass the parcel, so I splashed out on something a little more grown up,” Miss Burge said.
She said that the girls received lots of attention from their neighbours and that they liked “having all eyes on them”.
Along with the breast enlargement voucher, Poppy also received a $400 computer, a $680 pink Swarovski crystal ring and necklace set, and the promise of a $6 000 spa break.
“I wanted a new computer, a holiday and a voucher for surgery. When I got it all, it was a dream come true. All my friends were jealous,” Poppy said.
In an interview on daytime talk show “The Doctors”, Poppy said: "I think it's great because you can change yourself if you're not happy.”
Sarah Burge has spent more than $700 000 on her own surgical enhancements, and celebrated her 51st birthday with nearly $80 000 worth of surgery, including a facelift, bottom implants and liposuction.
She said she sees the vouchers as “investing in her [Poppy’s] future – like saving money for her education” and she gets “angry when strangers say I’m a bad mother because I don’t think there’s any harm in giving her this gift.”
“Girls don’t want Snow White and Cinderella any more… They want to be WAGS and famous like Cheryl Cole and Lady Gaga. I’m just supporting her and making her dreams come true.”
