During the winter months, I have a hard time wearing anything other than sweatpants, leggings, and jeans. I appreciate versatility and hate being cold; in years past I wore skinny jeans and jeggings almost exclusively. However, over the past few seasons I have taken major strides outside of my comfort zone and really leaned into the latest denim trends.
Since I basically get paid to write about jeans, I get to sample styles I wouldn’t necessarily gravitate toward on my own—like V-waistlines, baggy legs, or wedgie butts. Yet here I am, wearing them nonstop. Below are the denim styles I am living in this winter from Mother, Levi’s, Agolde, and Citizens of Humanity.
Attention-Grabber: Agolde V-Waist Baggy, $248; nordstrom.com
Editor’s Pick: Citizens of Humanity Ayla Baggy with Tuxedo Stripe, $358; citizensofhumanity.com
Under $50 Icon: Levi’s Wedgie Straight Leg Jean, $56 (Originally $80); amazon.com
Best Flare: Mother The Tomcat Roller Sneak, $268; amazon.com and bergdorfgoodman.com
Skinny Jean Alternative: Mother The Hiker Skimp, $268; amazon.com
Feel Like Sweatpants: Mother The Spitfire Sneak in Faded Black, $160 (Originally $228); motherdenim.com
Agolde V-Waist Baggy
Clearly inspired by the dropped waist denim of the ‘90s, the Agolde V-Waist Baggy is a high waisted style that dips just low enough to keep it interesting. The butt fits in a snug manner that shows off your assets while the roomy, straight leg keeps the look current.
Citizens of Humanity Ayla Baggy with Tuxedo Stripe
I’ve had zero desire to own a pair of tuxedo stripe jeans, even though they are majorly trending right now. However, I slipped on this pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans and now I am obsessed. Compared to the cuffed Citizens of Humanity Ayla jeans in my closet, this new version is much more tailored-looking, as it is designed out of a sturdy, non-stretch denim that really holds its shape. I’ve worn them with everything from heels to Jordans and have gotten so many compliments. (Rihanna is a fan of the brand’s ultra popular baggy style sans stripe, FYI.)
Levi’s Wedgie Straight Leg Jean
Jennifer Aniston and Kylie Jenner can afford diamond encrusted jeans, so the fact that both stars regularly rock Levi’s basically solidifies their iconic status. My preference are the brand’s Wedgie Straight Leg Jean; the straight leg butt-huggers come in so many washes and sizes and flatter just about every type of figure. At under-$60 on AMazon, I dare you not to give them a chance.
Mother The Tomcat Roller Sneak
I was recently gifted a slightly more subdued and trendy version of the Mother jeans I was rocking all summer, The Tomcat Roller Sneak. While the style still offers that super retro, high-waisted, flared look as the Mother Runaway Jeans, the thigh is much more relaxed, which somehow feels a little less dramatic and more laid back. I also love that they are designed out of the brand’s beloved as-comfy-as-leggings stretch denim.
Mother The Hiker Skimp
If you are still struggling to part ways with skinny jeans, Mother The Hiker Skimp makes a great gateway pair into something more current. With a mid-rise waist and a straight, slender leg straight leg designed out of the stretch-denim, the style pairs well with heels, sneakers, and even boots and can be dressed up or down.
Mother The Spitfire Sneak
I always joke with my friends that Mother The Spitfire Sneak is my sweatpants alternative. Low slung on the hips with a wide, straight leg, this slouchy, exaggerated style is made out of comfy, stretchy denim. I also love the longer-than-usual 32-inch inseam, so the leg sort of pools up at the floor in an ultra cool manner.
