Woman unimpressed with 'hideous' heirloom engagement ring
It’s arguably the most important piece of jewellery you’ll ever wear, but one woman has been left unimpressed by the ‘hideous’ ring her boyfriend proposed to her with.
The woman took to a Facebook group to post a picture of the unusual bling, which features a pearl in the middle, surrounded by two gold bands.
Despite explaining that the ring used to belong to her fiancé’s grandmother, she said she thought it was a joke when he dropped to one knee and presented it to her.
Her photo and Facebook post has since been shared to Reddit, with users divided on what they think of her public admission.
“My boyfriend finally asked me to marry him and this is really what he gives me,” she started her post.
“He pulled it out of his pocket and it took just about everything in me to not laugh and question whether this was real life or not.”
She went on to say that she’s had it for a few days and it’s grown on her but she wishes it was ‘something different’.
“But oh well, it was his grandmother’s and the pearl is my birthstone and I think that’s the only reason I’ve been able to tolerate it,” she continued.
A lot of people on Reddit agreed with the woman’s thoughts on the ring.
“It’s a terrible engagement ring (pearls are soft and should only be worn occasionally) but don’t post to Facebook about it. I hope he realises she will be doing this with all their problems and that’s super unhealthy,” another person said.
“Truth. I love pearls but as beautiful as they are, they’re terrible for everyday wear,” the comments continued.
“It looks like a 60s ring. My grandmother wears a hideous late 60s ring that she said is going to me in her will. It’s foul but it is the only thing she ever wore so I feel like it’ll remind me of her.”
Others acknowledged that it’s not the best bling to look at, but couldn’t understand why she would post about it on social media.
“Dude did a horrible job picking out a ring and probably didn’t really think about it or talk to her beforehand. However, she’s now humiliated him and opened him up to being judged. Not a good start to their engagement,” one person said.
“She was trashy for posting this on FB, but I agree that is not an engagement ring,” another commenter said.
“I agree, I don’t think she should have made this post but that ring is awful,” a commenter said.
However, some thought the woman was being too harsh on her fiancé, especially because the ring holds sentimental value.
“Hope that guy takes the ring back and runs,” one user wrote.
