A woman says she experienced a painful reaction to a popular weight-loss drug, saying it made her “pass blood” and experience pains she likened to being “ripped open with a knife.”

Karen Coe, 59, who has type 2 diabetes, says she was prescribed a GLP-1 medication to help her lose weight and get her disease under control, according to the Daily Mail. But she claims she began experiencing adverse effects immediately after her first dose, which she took on March 14 of this year.

“At first I had a headache and got dizzy. I had a few stomach cramps,” Coe claims. But three days later, she claims she woke up at 5 a.m. in “excruciating” pain.

GLP-1 is short for glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists; examples are semaglutide and tirzepatide, which work in the brain to impact satiety. These GLP-1 medications have become trendy tools for weight loss.

But for Coe, who hails from the English town of Hailsham, the side effects were excruciating: “It was like being ripped open with a knife. I nearly passed out,” she said. “I was dizzy and really cold.”

Her husband called for an ambulance — but she claims doctors told her “it was all ok.” A week later, however, she was back at the hospital with what she claims is a “massive blood clot.”
