Why Sia Wants to Legally Change Her Name
Australian singer-songwriter Sia
Sia has officially requested a legal change to her name as a sweet nod to her husband, Dan Bernard.
The Australian musician is known among fans by her first name, though she is technically “Sia Kate Furler.” It’s her surname that the “Chandelier” singer is now attempting to change.
According to court documents obtained this week by TMZ, Sia, 48, now wants to take her husband’s last name as her own. She filed the request on Thursday, May 2, just one day before she celebrated a major moment in her musical career.

Sia’s legal filing was just one element contributing to an already busy week for the “Cheap Thrills” singer. On Friday, May 3, she released Reasonable Woman, a 15-track album featuring a few notable guest appearances. Among the stars who joined Sia for a song on the album were Paris Hilton, who was featured on the single “Fame Won’t Love You,” and Kylie Minogue, who sang on “Dance Alone.”
“To my dearest frans! Thank you so very very much for all the love,” Sia wrote in an Instagram post celebrating her album’s arrival. “You’re inside my heart forever, and always with me. I am so happy and safe and feel so loved by you. Love, Sia.”
The pop star filed her name change request less than one week before her one-year wedding anniversary with Bernard. The two were first spotted spending time together in late 2021, according to The Daily Mail. About 18 months after their initial public outing, the two tied the knot on May 8, 2023, in a small ceremony at Italian designers Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana’s home in Portofino, Italy, Page Six reported.
Before Bernard, Sia was married to filmmaker Erik Anders Lang between 2014 and 2016. Four years after their divorce, the “Unstoppable” singer revealed that she had in 2019 adopted two sons who were both “aging out” of foster care.
