With the support of Australia behind him, Guy Sebastian has placed fifth in this year's Eurovison Song Contest grand final in Vienna, Austria.

One of 27 finalists in the ballad-heavy contest which was taken out by Sweden, Sebastian, 33, cut through the noise with an energetic performance of his up-tempo R&B-pop hit, Tonight Again.

Looking casual-cool in a navy blazer and tie, beige chinos, brown brogues and bowler hat, "So good to see the support with all the team Guy T-shirts," tweeted Sebastian, who took to the giant stage at the Stadthalle arena in Vienna with a crew of backup singers and dancers, as his wife Jules watched on from a roaring 16,000-strong crowd. "I couldn't be prouder right now," she tweeted.

The wildcard entrant was invited to represent Australia for the first time as part of the 60th anniversary of the world's biggest song contest and was fast-tracked to the grand final. He'd been tipped by many to place in the top 3 and was the talk of the town from the moment he arrived in Vienna, having built a groundswell of support during a press tour throughout Europe.

"The phrase, 'Music brings people together' doesn't get much more literal than this,'" tweeted Sebastian, who let his hair down over drinks in the "rowdy" green room. "Such a positive vibe in the room."
