It's been 25 years since Boy Meets World’s Cory and Topanga got married on the show — and Danielle Fishel still remembers the hoopla surrounding the big day.

As Boy Meets World fans will remember, Fishel’s character Topanga Lawrence proposed to high school sweetheart Cory Matthews (played by Ben Savage) in the show’s May 1998 season 5 finale. Fresh out of high school, the two characters spent the show’s sixth season engaged before tying the knot early in the seventh and final season, on Nov. 5, 1999.

In an interview with TVLine on Nov. 5, 2024, 43-year-old Fishel says, "I can’t believe I’ve been married for 25 years."

Still, Fishel remembers what a "big deal" the nuptials were at the time.

"I remember that it was a big deal that Cory and Topanga were getting married. I remember that they made a website," she tells TVLine. "The Internet still felt very new, and you could go to this website and ABC did a poll [asking fans if Cory and Topanga should get married]."

She continues: "It brings up so many fond memories of a simpler time. On the other hand, I’m like, 'Oh, man … these creaky knees that I have!' "

In June, Fishel reflected on why the fictional couple's relationship resonated with so many, saying on an episode of her rewatch podcast Pod Meets World that the couple seemed to truly love one another.

“Just to see teenagers who love each other winning and and it being taken seriously,” Fishel explained. “Everyone's telling you when you're a teenager, ‘You don't know what love is,’ and you just want someone to say, ‘Maybe you do. Maybe this is real. Maybe you're right and this is forever and we're wrong.’ ”

Still, in a conversation with PEOPLE at 90s Con in early 2024, Fishel shared she thought Cory and Topanga were too young to get married.

"Yes! Of course we were," she said when asked. "Now, it worked out for them, and kudos to them, and there are always going to be those success stories. There are stories of it working out but I would say, on a whole, getting married right out of high school is not usually ideal.”
