Where to Buy the Cheapest Eggs Right Now

Eggs used to be the humble kitchen staple that we all had and could afford, but suddenly they feel like a luxury item. Over the past few years, the price of eggs has skyrocketed, leaving many of us clutching our grocery lists in shock. The culprit? A perfect storm of inflation, rising feed costs, supply chain woes and a devastating avian flu outbreak that affected millions of hens.

Now, we find ourselves on an egg hunt of a different kind, scouring grocery stores for the best deals like kids hunting Easter eggs. Will prices go down? Experts are cautiously optimistic that we could see some relief soon, but until then, we’re cracking more jokes than eggs, rationing omelets and keeping our fingers crossed that our wallets won’t be scrambled any further!

If you're looking for the lowest price of eggs right now, content creator Alli Powell (@grocerygettinggirl) may have the answer to your search.

As of December 2024, California had the highest egg prices in the country, with the average price of a dozen eggs clocking in at $8.97. Southern states had the lowest egg prices at an average of $3.40 per dozen. According to the Urner Barry, a company that tracks commodity prices, the average national price for a dozen eggs was $4.83 on January 6, 2025.

Alli, who lives in San Diego, posted a video of her shopping for eggs and said she'd been to the grocery store chain Food 4 Less and the eggs there were $9 a dozen. She headed over to Costco and even though things were "chaotic," she was able to snag some cheaper eggs.

In Alli's video, which was taken on January 6, 2025, there were people with carts piled high with eggs, and who can blame them? Costco has eggs at $16.49 for five dozen and $6.89 for two dozen. That is $3.29 per dozen for the five-dozen pack and $3.45 per dozen for the two-dozen pack.

Alli said she was at the store between 10-10:30 a.m. and she "heard my Costco sold out of all those eggs by that afternoon."

"The guy with the cart full of eggs clearly worked for a restaurant. I’ve heard egg deliveries have been getting canceled forcing employees to go out to buy them," Alli said in the caption of her Instagram video.

Keep in mind that egg prices and availability vary from location to location, but if you have a Costco membership, you might want to add eggs to the top of your shopping list (and get there early).

Alli said that if you don't have a Costco membership, you should go to Trader Joe's. She said a Trader Joe's employee told her that the grocery chain has not raised its egg prices at all, so you can snag two dozen eggs for $6. At the California location where Alli shopped, she said they had lots of eggs in stock.

Of course, all of this could be different where you live, but if you want to get a decent price on eggs, start at these stores first thing in the morning and happy egg hunting!
