The best things to see and do at Vivid Sydney 2019
One of the world’s biggest light festivals, Vivid Sydney, is back for its 11th year, and again a series of vibrant installations, illuminating shows and glowing walkabouts will feature across the harbour city.
Running from 24 May until 15 June, Vivid Sydney’s dazzling displays will span from Barangaroo to the Botanic Gardens, with something for everyone.
Here are some of the hot spots to check out.
Royal Botanic Garden
There will be 15 installations throughout the gardens, with the Dancing Grass, River of Light, and Firefly Field displays touted to be the must-sees.
A retro-futuristic satellite dish, KA3323, will also be on location, encouraging visitors to look into the sky.
There will also be the Jungle Boogie, a section where you can dance along to 18 interactive musical instruments, as well as a giant glowing bee hotel aptly named Beetopia.
Darling Harbour Tumbalong Lights
Back for its second year after 60,000 visitors in 2018, the event’s Tumbalong Lights inclusive playground features the Under the Milky Way walkway as well as the opportunity to play with SpaceBalls and explore the 3D animated set, Dream States.
There will also be the Robot SPACELand display at Cockle Bay Wharf featuring a 16 metre-tall centrepiece to ogle at.
Taronga Zoo
The Lights for the Wild experience comes to Taronga Zoo this year during Vivid Sydney, allowing viewers to explore a series of giant animal light sculptures.
There will be a Sumatran Rhino, Chameleon, as well as Sumatran Tiger cubs, lions, a Koala and laser gardens.
Barangaroo
A family-friendly favourite, Barangaroo will transform into a mindblowing Winter Camp.
There will be light, sound and puppets this year reflecting narratives surrounding the land and its relationship with First Nation peoples.
Keep a look out for the six-metre tall puppet Marri Dyin (Great Woman) which will be a festival highlight.
Circular Quay
Kick start your evening with the vibrant Samsung Electronic Playground at First Fleet Park.
This year there will be over 320 light poles, a 6.5 metre illuminated Infinity Slide, and the Samsung Galaxy Studio that boats some interactive light experiences for visitors.
Also brace yourself for the opportunity to marvel over a spectacular elevated view of Sydney Harbour.
Customs House is always a favourite with the kids, and this year there will ba an Under the Harbour light show projected onto the famous building.
