Watch the moment the Queen broke her own protocol at garden party
Getting up close and personal with the Queen is a privilege afforded to only a few and the experience is one often dominated by protocol and procedure.
But Her Majesty relaxed her own rules during a Buckingham Palace garden party yesterday, when interacting with one lucky attendee.
Blogger Laura-Ann Barr, from Northern Ireland, was shocked to even score an invite to the well-heeled festivities but this was amplified when she struck up a conversation with the Queen.
By offering flowers, the mother-of-two managed to catch Her Majesty’s attention and cheekily skirt around the event’s often-strict rules.
"I didn't see anyone else with flowers, I suppose it's not really meant to be done at a garden party but I was only going to have one chance of meeting the Queen and I was going to give it my all," Laura-Ann told HELLO!.
"(Security) did inform me that unfortunately she would not stop to accept them as it's not protocol, but if I'm lucky her lady-in-waiting might spot them and accept them on her behalf... I think they were very shocked when it happened!"
This feeling was captured in an adorable clip of the moment, posted on Laura’s Instagram, which showed the pair’s unexpected exchange in full.
“Your Majesty I’ve got some flowers for you, nice to meet you. You look beautiful in pink today,” Laura-Ann is heard saying in the clip.
The Queen then thanked Laura-Ann for the kind gesture and passed the flowers to her lady-in-waiting who didn’t look too pleased with Laura-Ann’s breach of protocol.
“It’s easier for me to carry them, then the Queen can have them when she goes indoors,” the lady-in-waiting said.
Laura-Ann can be heard saying ‘no problem’, before the lady-in-waiting hurries after the Queen.
After their brief conversation had passed, Laura-Ann excitedly turns to the camera and smiles in disbelief before a courtier congratulated her on a ‘beautiful’ exchange.
