WATCH: Fashion Designer Isaac Mizrahi Joins The Daily Beast Podcast
Co-hosts Joanna Coles and Samantha Bee tackled a whirlwind of topics on this week’s episode of The Daily Beast Podcast, from Pope Francis’ shady comments to Elon Musk’s chaotic politics, and the troubling return of “heroin chic” on fashion runways and awards show red carpets.
Coles and Bee began by unpacking Pope Francis’ recent remarks criticizing “vinegar faced” nuns and scolding them for gossiping. “Imagine telling them to smile more while they’re rinsing out his dirty socks,” Coles quipped. Bee added, “What else is there for them but gossip and hard work?”
From there, the conversation veered to Musk, who the Daily Beast’s Executive Editor Hugh Dougherty described as the “id of MAGA.” Opinions clashed as Joanna defended Musk’s “genius” while Samantha dubbed him a “rich madman on a micro-dosing bender.” While Joanna defended Musk’s innovation, citing his achievements with Tesla and SpaceX, Bee claimed his reservoir of good ideas had run dry—“He tweets 62 of the worst ideas a day,” she said.
The tension underscored Musk’s polarizing presence, even within the MAGA movement, where his pro-immigration stance puts him at odds with hardliners like Steve Bannon. Dougherty noted, “There’s a real difference between people who want to seal the border entirely and those like Musk, who believe America should attract the best minds from around the world.”
The episode wrapped with a fiery segment featuring Isaac Mizrahi, who delivered a scathing critique of Melania Trump’s “artificial” look and a call to action for equality. Mizrahi skewered the resurgence of “heroin chic” and called for legislative change. “I don’t need to scrutinize women anymore,” he declared. “What needs fixing isn’t fashion—it’s equality.”
