The Viral "Seesaw" Styling Trick Transforms Baggy Looks—Here's How To Try the Trend
It's a "cheat code" for making every oversized outfit look put together.
Putting together an oversized yet flattering outfit is no easy feat, whether you’re attempting to make old pieces look fresh in the throes of #NoSpendJanuary or questioning your decision to jump on the flared capris bandwagon. However, once you swap in a pair of Sambas for your moto boots or add a flowy top over your cropped T-shirt, suddenly, everything just works. It’s like Law Roach waved his sartorial wand, and you’re left looking more Zendaya street style than post-college grocery run. However, a TikToker argues that the “Seesaw” styling formula is directly responsible for your baggy outfit glow-ups (as well as the looks you’d prefer to leave in the past).
Stylist @JustMacros is trending for her “Seesaw” styling method, which she claims creates “balanced and fun outfits” even in Gen Z-loved baggy silhouettes by following a few fashion rules. In response to a follower who asked for help with preventing their “oversized and shapeless” clothes from looking “sloppy,” the TikTok creator laid out her formula for maintaining balance and offsetting different proportions with everything from your hairstyle to your accessories while you’re building an outfit.
TikTok's "Seesaw Styling Method
“The idea that if you go back and forth building an outfit using pieces of different dress codes or textures or colors, you can create a visually interesting outfit that maintains its balance,” she captioned a video shared on January 9. In the TikTok, @JustMacros demonstrated this by wearing an “oversized, shapeless piece” of clothing on both the bottom and top–in this case, a pair of wide-legged red-and-white striped pants and a baggy white t-shirt–as well as her hair down in voluminous natural waves and a pair of tennis shoes.
The personal stylist explained that the look didn’t work because you’re left with “one style, one flavor, one tone,” which puts the metaphorical seesaw way too far to one side and “isn’t fun for anyone.” To transform her low-effort outfit into a cool girl ‘fit, @JustMacros then demonstrated how she leveled out the seesaw with a few swaps while leaving the basic look intact. She got rid of the tennis shoes for mahogany leather booties, put her hair into a half-up style, and added a pair of round glasses and a cult-favorite Madewell leather side bag.
The Trick to Styling Baggy Outfits
By adding a “hard” texture through the bag and the boots, the TikToker felt comfortable adding another “soft” element through a black blazer. “We go through building outfits by going back and forth between texture and soft, texture and soft. Or work appropriate, then coffee, then work appropriate, then coffee,” she explained of the fashion dichotomy that people should be aiming for. “Then we get outfits that have amazing juxtaposition in them, as well as keeping harmony.”
Basically, if your outfit feels “off,” this is a good method to turn to to ensure you’re less likely to have regrettable fashion choices moving forward.
The Reviews
People were quick to flood the video's comment section to confirm that this theory works, with one writing, “I feel like I just watched a magic trick.” Others called adding accessories and jewelry a “cheat code” for instantly elevating an oversized look, with one person explaining, “The day I realized I could go all baggy and just do half-up hair and hoops changed my life.”
Now, all that's left to do is try the "seesaw" method out for yourself. It might just be the secret to finally embracing the baggy trend in 2025.
