Viral Baby Pygmy Hippo Moo Deng Now Has Her Own Catchy Song, and It's Available in 4 Languages

The internet's obsession with adorable baby pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng continues.

The cute animal skyrocketed to fame in September after videos of her at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province, Thailand, spread on social media. She is now the subject of a new song titled "Moodeng Moodeng." The upbeat track is available in four different languages: Thai, English, Chinese, and Japanese.

The catchy 50-second song — released by Thailand music company GMM Music — features lyrics such as, 'Moo Deng Moo Deng, boing boing boing/ Mommy mommy, play with me," referencing the bouncy baby animal's mom, Jona.

"Please, mommy, come play with me / Bounce with me, mom," the lyrics add.

The accompanying music video shows the hippo, now four months old, bouncing along to the words as the lyrics play beside her.

In September, the Thai PBS World news outlet stated, "Visitor numbers on Saturdays and Sundays are reported to have more than doubled, from 3,000 to 6,000 or 7,000 each day," with many guests heading to Moo Deng's enclosure.

The zoo has since added CCTV cameras to the hippo's habitat to monitor visitors and keep the baby hippo safe after some people allegedly threw things at her to wake her up.

"These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous," the zoo's director, Narongwit Chodchoi, said in a statement shared via the BBC. "We must protect these animals and ensure that they have a safe and comfortable environment."

The Thai zoo's Instagram and TikTok pages are filled with Moo Deng-related content since the venue announced the hippo's birth on Sept. 6.

The English translation of the announcement reads: "Let me formally introduce myself. My name is Moo Deng, a female pygmy hippopotamus born on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. My mother is Jona, 25 years old, and my father is Tony, 24 years old. I'm currently single and 59 days old. 🤣🤣"

Zookeeper Atthapon Nundee previously told the Associated Press that Moo Deng's level of fame "was beyond expectation."

"I wanted people to know her. I wanted many people to visit her, watch her online, or leave fun comments. I never would've thought [of this]," Nundee said.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the pygmy hippopotamus is endangered, with less than 3,000 in the wild.
