"RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé."

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White are taking their relationship to the next level after five years of dating.

The Vampire Diaries star, 34, and the former Olympic snowboarder, 36, announced Wednesday that they're engaged to be married, sharing photos on social media of White's epic proposal beneath an arch of white roses.

"RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé," Dobrev wrote in an Instagram post featuring a snap of an embrace that sees White sweeping her off her feet. Over on his own page, White shared a photo of himself down on one knee and wrote, "She said YES."

The couple also opened up about the relationship milestone in an interview with Vogue, in which White revealed that the proposal was a long time coming — it just took him a while to find the perfect moment. Wanting to guarantee a surprise, White plotted an elaborate scheme, enlisting Dobrev's publicist to send her a fake invitation to a cocktail hour with Anna Wintour.

"He made the invite look so legitimate," Dobrev said with a laugh. But instead of arriving at an intimate evening with the fashion icon, Dobrev entered the restaurant to find White in a candlelit room with a photographer and hundreds of white roses.

"I went into shock," Dobrev recalled. "I just froze and stared at him."

When she eventually moved to meet him in the middle, White immediately clocked her nerves. "When she's nervous she'll make jokes," he said. "She's like, 'So, wait, Anna's not here?'"

By that point, Dobrev had essentially blacked out — though she does remember White nailing his proposal speech. "He said all the right things," the actress recalled. While they initially opted to keep the news within their inner circle, Dobrev has since grown tired of leaving her engagement ring at home, adding, "I don't want to take it off anymore."

The actress and the athlete first sparked dating rumors in 2020, when they were spotted riding bikes together in Malibu. They went Instagram official two months later — courtesy of Dobrev giving White a quarantine haircut — and later revealed that their relationship began in 2019 and led to them moving in together at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, White hinted at the possibility of a future engagement while chatting with PEOPLE. "We're just enjoying our time together right now. No pressure," he told the outlet in May. "But I told her, I was like, 'Look, after the Olympics, I finally got my freedom to do whatever. And let's just have fun and be together and support each other.'"

White, who retired from competing after the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, added, "But you never know. We'll see what happens.”
