“The Valley” Star Kristen Doute Details 'Romantic' Fishing Trip Proposal and How She Almost Found the Ring Box

Kristen Doute is giving fans of The Valley some insight into her "romantic" fishing-trip engagement to now fiancé Luke Broderick!

The reality TV star, 42, caught up with Tori Spelling on the latest episode of her misSPELLING podcast on Thursday, March 27, as she revealed that the proposal will be shown on the Bravo series' second season — although she's only seen "a tiny little smidgen of a clip" herself.

"The only thing I hate is, like, it's on the trailer in the very beginning and the first thing I say is, ‘Oh, f---,'" Doute, 42, said. "Like, why wasn't it this, like, Bachelor moment of, like, ‘Uh’ and then the ring and all the fairy fairy tale book type that you see? No. My response was, I turn around having no idea that he sat on one knee on a boat. And I'm just like, that's so romantic."

As previously reported, the duo made their engagement official in September when Broderick popped the question while they were filming the second season of The Valley, a source told PEOPLE. They later shared snaps of the moment to Instagram.

"We were on a fishing boat. So in my mind, I'm like, I'm not even putting makeup on," Doute recalled of her thought process that day. "Like, we're going on a fishing boat. I'm vegetarian, I don’t fish. My fiancé is such a fisherman. And in my mind, I'm picturing, like, Bubba Gump shrimp from [Forrest Gump]. Like, just fish guts all over."

"But I didn’t know. And I'm like, why would I get cute? And even though we had just gotten to Hawaii, one of my nails came off," she added. "So I'm like, 'Great.' It wasn't in my left hand luckily, but I'm just like, ‘Oh, OK. So let me glue this one on, not the same color, whatever.’"

Doute added that watching the footage back will make it clear she "had no idea what was going on." As she told Spelling, at one point, she even came close to discovering Broderick's plan — but luckily, things stayed a surprise.

"It blows my mind because everyone calls me detective Doute. Like, how did I not see this how did I not there were times I would go through his bag to look for something and the ring's in there," she said. "But I didn't know to look for a ring. Why would I even think of you know what I mean? So it's like it didn't even occur to me."

"We went to visit his grandma one day, and, like, he he's like, 'Oh, where are those pictures at that my mom gave us?' I'm like, 'I'll go over to the car.' So I'm ripping through every bag looking for these and he had the ring in his pocket. But he had a box, but I didn't see the box. And if I would have saw a box that says Kyle Chan on it, a ring box, I would have known in a heartbeat."

Broderick and the Vanderpump Rules alum first met in June 2022, when he was a groomsman at her friend's wedding, two weeks after her split from her ex Alex Menache. On The Valley, she revealed that she thought he was "sweet, he’s kind, he’s funny and then we had sex behind a tent and the rest is history.”

They announced their relationship during a December 2022 episode of their podcast, Balancing Act with Kristen Doute and Luke Broderick.

In December, a month after revealing that they were expecting their first baby together, Doute confirmed to PEOPLE that they are having a girl. "Luke and I are so thrilled to be having a little girl, which honestly was unexpected because I was convinced we were having a boy!" Doute said at the time, adding that they were looking forward to "this next chapter in our lives together and to soon welcome our baby girl next summer."

As for the engagement itself, Doute and Broderick shared pictures of the Maui moment to Instagram in September, alongside a touching caption.

"i’m wrapped around your finger like this ring i’m wearing 💍 🤟🏽 out of the all the fish in the sea, you chose me 🥹," they wrote in a joint post, thanking the ring designer for "creating the most beautiful ring!!"
