Universal’s Massive New Theme Park Just Got the Green Light

Fresh off the success of their latest expansion in Florida, Universal is turning their attention to adding yet another exciting theme park to their eclectic lineup of properties. Slated for a potential opening date of 2031, Universal's newest park will be based 35 miles south of Bedford, England, roughly 60 miles northwest of London.

The project marks the first time Universal will develop a park overseas in Europe, complete with a lengthy list of offerings that include a massive hotel and a sprawling entertainment complex.

At 476 acres, the park will be four times the size of Universal Studios Floridas, which encapsulates a mere 106 acres in comparison to Universal's prospective United Kingdom venture. The property will also include a 500-room hotel and a large shopping complex with various entertainment venues, restaurants, and adjoining retail shops, similar to Universal's CityWalk in both Orlando and Hollywood.

While specific details about the attractions inside the park are still up for speculation, Universal has confirmed the new park will feature "Universal’s distinct brand of immersive storytelling, thrilling rides, innovative attractions, and exciting entertainment, all utilizing sophisticated and advanced technology."

In conceptual artwork for the park, eagle-eyed viewers can clearly make out the addition of several large roller coasters, all of which encircle a large lake within the center of the property.

Though certainly an exciting announcement for dedicated theme park fanatics, officials within the United Kingdom's government have also voiced their enthusiasm for the project. In an official press release, the country's prime minister, Keir Starmer, said of the news, "Today we closed the deal on a multi-billion-pound investment that will see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe, firmly putting the county on the global stage."

Similarly, Universal has expressed their belief the project will help open additional doors for the company's expansion into Europe, with Universal Destinations & Experiences CEO Mark Woodbury stating, "Bringing a world-class theme park and resort to the United Kingdom is a tremendous opportunity and is part of our strategy to introduce the Universal brand and experiences to new audiences around the globe."
