'Un-Australian' Vegemite toast goes viral
Vegemite toast is as quintessentially Australian as Crocodile Dundee, but while it may not be to everyone’s taste, there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to do it.
On unlucky Aussie traveller received the latter while waiting at Sydney Airport, and has taken to Reddit to slam the dismal attempt at Vegemite toast.
The image of possibly the most disappointing Vegemite toast we have ever seen was posted on a thread that celebrates all things Aussie.
“Vegemite on toast from Soul Origin, Sydney Domestic Terminal. Un-Australian!” the traveller wrote alongside an image.
The slices of grain bread seem barely toasted to start with, but it’s the “p***-poor” amount of Vegemite that was smeared onto the toast with next to no conviction, that has sent the internet into a spin.
“That just looks like toast. I don’t think they’ve actually put any Vegemite on it,” one person commented.
“This looks like they walked past a jar of Vegemite while holding the bread and then called it a day,” another said.
“I’m not even convinced there is toast in that, let alone Vegemite,” another added.
And even people who admitted they didn’t like the iconic spread themselves, conceded there was definitely something wrong the amount put on this toast.
“I hate the stuff and even I know that isn’t quite enough,” was one response.
“I’m fairly sure that’s illegal in Australia,” another person commented.
Soul Origin responded to the uproar in the most Aussie way possible, by offering everyone a free Vegemite toast with any coffee purchase tomorrow – April 3.
“Some enjoy a light spread of Vegemite whereas others eat it by the spoon full. Then there’s the question of whether the butter should go on first or on top of the Vegemite (or both),” Soul Origin CEO Chris Mavris said in a statement.
