The Netflix drama’s six-episode swan song dropped on Thursday, and it sadly came and went without ever resurrecting Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), the Sparrow that Tom Hopper’s Luther fell in love with and married during the previous third season.

At the end of Season 3, Sir Reginald’s attempt to reprogram the universe was interrupted by Allison, thus transporting the Umbrella Academy siblings to a half-formed world where they no longer possessed their powers. Luther, who had tragically died just minutes before the universe was reset, ultimately came back to life in the new world. Meanwhile, Sloane, who was very much alive when the universe was reprogrammed, disappeared entirely when the new world was created — and she never reappeared in Season 4, which showrunner Steve Blackman says was a matter of logistics.

“I never got to do the Luther-Sloane storyline that I wanted to do this season,” Blackman shares in the video above, when asked how the final season’s smaller episode count — just six installments, compared to the usual 10 — impacted its narrative. “I wanted Sloane to be alive, just not remembering Luther, and him trying to get her to love him again. For logistical reasons, we just couldn’t make it work. We just couldn’t make it happen.”

Fortunately, Hopper wasn’t left too crestfallen by the lack of closure for Luther and Sloane, but he acknowledges that the storyline remained “incomplete.”

“There’s an element where it’s never really mentioned [throughout Season 4],” he says. “What happened to her?”
