UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Family Welcomes New Siberian Kitten to Downing Street

10 Downing Street's Larry the Cat is soon to have a mousing competitor with the news that Prime Minister Keir Starmer's teen children have talked him into letting them get a new pet.

The new addition is reported to be a Siberian kitten that will join the family's rescue cat named JoJo and Downing Street's famous feline, Larry the 17-year-old cat.

Sky news reports that the addition of the Siberian kitten comes after a long series of negotiations between the Prime Minister and his teenagers. "There's been a long summer of negotiations, back and forth, different options," he revealed in a BBC 5 Live interview with Matt Chorley.

"But now we've gone for - and this is agreed after long negotiations - I said we'd get in the room and sort it out - we are now getting a kitten instead of a dog."

Larry — a gray and white tabby who roams the heart of government as if it is his own personal realm — has been a fixture of the residence for more than 13 years, outlasting five prime ministers. He’s affectionately known as "chief mouser" to the Cabinet’s office. Larry first arrived at Downing Street in February 2011. Larry came from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, which is a well-known animal rescue center in London. Larry was first brought in to control the rodent population.

Larry is about 17 years old. He is reported to be in pretty good health, but as of late there have been occasional reports about his health being monitored closely due to his senior years. There has even been reports about what will be said when the sad time comes when Larry passes.

Parade Pets reported last month, "There's even a name for the protocol officials will follow when he dies, Operation Larry Bridges (a play on Operation London Bridge, the protocol that was in place when the Queen died in 2022)."

Multiple sources told the outlet that a press release, graphics, and a social media plan have been devised for the inevitable day when they have to inform the public that Larry is no longer with us.
