Trisha Paytas Details How She Guest-Starred on “SNL” and Why Bowen Yang Is Now Her 'Favorite Person' (Exclusive)
The internet personality tells PEOPLE about guest-starring on the latest episode of 'Saturday Night Live' in a sketch with host Paul Mescal
Trisha Paytas wasn't planning to appear on Saturday Night Live over the weekend — until Bowen Yang unexpectedly reached out.
The 36-year-old internet personality guest-starred on the Dec. 7 episode of NBC's iconic weekly comedy show in a sketch with host Paul Mescal about Spotify Wrapped, and she tells PEOPLE the opportunity came about just "48 hours" before she was live on TV.
"On Thursday, [Yang] was like, 'I wrote a sketch for you, do you want to come on Saturday Night Live?' I was like, 'What?'" says Paytas, who's in the midst of her Trishmas Live Tour and flew from San Diego to New York City later that night. "The next day I was in rehearsals."

Yang, 34, had previously spoken about his love for Paytas' online content on his Las Culturistas podcast, but she was especially flattered the Fire Island actor thought of her for a sketch. "And now he's my favorite person in the whole world," she says.
The sketch featured Paytas as herself on the fictional Awakenings podcast, a.k.a. Mescal's character Myron's most-streamed of the year on Spotify. Alongside Yang as the podcast's host Satoshi Gutman, Paytas then surprised Myron and his friends (played by Andrew Dismukes, Ego Nwodim and Sarah Sherman) while they hung out at home.
At the end of the episode, Paytas was personally thanked by Mescal, 28, alongside musical performer Shaboozey and additional special guests Dana Carvey and David Spade — and that was the most surreal moment for her.
"I wanted to hide. I was going to be next to Bowen, like, 'Let me just stand next to you.' He was like, 'No, you're going to go to the front,' and I was like, 'Oh my God,'" she recalls. "It felt real. Also, hearing Paul Mescal be like, 'Thank you Trisha Paytas,' like, what did I do? That was crazy."
Paytas was especially excited to meet Spade, 60, of whom she's been a longtime fan — and he's well-aware, having previously spoken about her on Whitney Cummings' podcast.
"He was very nice," she says. "I was like, 'Wow, it's so cool that we got to meet on the SNL stage.' Because I felt more like I was meeting him as an equal rather than a fan."
Later that night, Paytas attended the post-show celebration, partook in a few rare glasses of champagne and got to chat with "so many cool people" like SNL star Kenan Thompson and comedian Ziwe.
"I hadn't drank since my wedding [to Moses Hacmon in 2021], so it's a little bit of a blur," she jokes. "But all of it was fun. I know that!"
Hacmon and their daughters, 2-year-old Malibu Barbie and Elvis, born in May, unfortunately weren't able to join their mom for the N.Y.C. trip, as "my little one was sick," says Paytas. Her husband, however, made sure Malibu got to see the sketch.
"Moses did send me a video. Him and Mal were watching SNL, and I don't think she's obviously grasped it, but she's like, 'Mommy!' And that to me is really cool," she adds.
