Celebrities and fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to Twin Peaks actress Peggy Lipton following her tragic death at age 72.

“I’m heartbroken. I had the opportunity to work with Peggy for a few days on a film. I absolutely fell in love with her,” tweeted US comedian Kathy Griffin.

“I’ve honestly always thought of Peggy as...perfect. Honest, funny, nurturing, oh and loved some good, juicy, gossip.”

Actor Steven Weber shared a photo of the late actress to remember her, while her famous daughters, Rashida and Kadida Jones, expressed their “heartbreak” in an official statement.

“We are heartbroken that our beloved mother passed away from cancer," they said.

“She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side. We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her.

“We can't put all of our feelings into words right now but we will say: Peggy was, and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us."

Peggy died of cancer at the age of 72 on Saturday.

She played one of a trio of Los Angeles undercover "hippie cops" on The Mod Squad, as well as Norma Jennings in Twin Peaks.

The actress married music producer Quincy Jones in 1974, and they had two daughters before divorcing in 1989.
