What it's like to have your town turned into a movie set

Barnesville Georgia was turned into the fictional town of Wind Gap Missouri for the HBO series Sharp Objects, which stars Amy Adams, and is based on the book by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn.

The novel and show follow journalist Camille Preaker (Adams) as she returns to her hometown of Wind Gap to investigate the grisly murder and disappearance of young girls.

The city of Barnesville is located almost 100km south of Atlanta. Series director Jean-Marc Vallee (of Big Little Lies) said he liked the angles that Barnesville’s downtown area offered rather than the typical town square. He was actually on his way to view another town (Jackson, Georgia) when he and the team passed through Barnesville and changed their minds.

Barnesville’s community development director Niki Sappington told Yahoo Lifestyle that the community really embraced the production of the show and were excited to spot the actors, especially Amy Adams, around town.

“People would come to the stores and eat in our restaurants just for a chance to see Amy Adams,” she told us.

“We’re really thrilled that they chose Barnesville. We know they were driving through and they said, ‘what about here?’ It was just pure luck.”

Sharp Objects is out now on DVD and Blu ray.
