Tom Holland recalls 'quite a lot of animosity' on “The Crowded Room” set: 'Not a very harmonious place'
The actor, who produced and starred in the psychological thriller, said there was "there was a lot of arguing" on set.
Tom Holland has revealed that things weren’t exactly peaceful in The Crowded Room.
The Marvel star explained in a recent Men’s Health interview that there were multiple clashes that occurred on set of the Apple TV+ miniseries, which he both executive produced and starred in as its protagonist Danny Sullivan. “There was quite a lot of animosity on that set,” Holland recalled. “It was not a very harmonious place, and there was a lot of arguing and butting heads.”
While the 28-year-old did not disclose any specific arguments, nor if they involved him or any members of the cast and crew, he told the outlet that the disagreements did not center around any of the show’s creative decisions. If they had been, Holland noted, he would’ve welcomed such spirited discussions.
Instead, Holland said that the on-set confrontations inspired him to remain committed to his sobriety journey at the time. He added, “I thought, If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s gonna get worse, right?”
Representatives for Apple TV+ did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.
Created by Akiva Goldsman (Constantine, I Am Legend), The Crowded Room follows a young man named Danny (Holland) as he comes to terms with his mysterious past through the help of therapist Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried) after he is involved in a shooting at the Rockefeller Center in New York City. The series, which was panned by critics, also starred Emmy Rossum, Christopher Abbott, and Thomas Sadoski.
Holland, who had taken on serious roles in films like Cherry and The Devil All the Time prior to the series, told EW that bringing Danny to life onscreen took a heavy toll on his mental health. "I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action-movie thing," he said at the time. "But the mental aspect, it really beat me up and it took a long time for me to recover afterwards, to sort of get back to reality."
The actor, who took a year-long hiatus from acting after the project, explained that he leaned on costars like Sasha Lane for support during production. "She was so helpful for me, because there were moments on set where I really was struggling to understand Danny's reasoning or Danny's actions," Holland said. "She would take me aside and was really open and willing to share some of her experiences that were so helpful in the moment.”

As part of the series, Holland also spoke with psychiatrists in order to better understand Danny's motivations, which he credited as being “so informative to my own life" when it came to "recognizing triggers" and "things that stress me out," including social media.
The Crowded Room is streaming now on Apple TV+.
