Tina Turner dies aged 83 following long illness

The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll passed away at her home in Switzerland.

Music legend Tina Turner has died at the age of 83 following a long, unspecified illness.

An official post from the Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll’s Instagram account confirmed the sad news on Thursday morning (Australia time).

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner,” the post read.

“With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Fox News reports that Tina, who became a Swiss citizen over a decade ago, died in her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland following a private health battle.

While the exact cause of death has not been revealed, she had experienced a number of health problems in recent years.

She was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and suffered from kidney failure in the same year due to high blood pressure. Her second husband Erwin Bach donated a kidney for her transplant surgery in 2017.

Tina's legacy

Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, the singer rose to fame alongside her first husband Ike Turner in the 1960s and is best known for her hits Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits, River Deep, Mountain High and The Best.

She received 12 Grammy Awards throughout her career, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and became the oldest female solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 with her song What’s Love Got To Do With It in 1984.

Tina also starred in the 1985 film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome alongside Mel Gibson, was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2021, and had her life made into a jukebox musical, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical - which premiered in Sydney just last week.

She is survived by her second husband Erwin Bach, who she married in 2013, and her two children Ike Turner Jr and Michael Turner. Her sons Raymond and Ronnie passed away in 2018 and 2022, respectively.
