Woman's 'silver poo' shocks doctors
A woman with a serious illness has been hospitalised after her faeces turned silver.
The 69-year-old unnamed woman was taken to the emergency room of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, in Washington DC, according to a case study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The woman had metastatic colon cancer but also said she had suffered from dizziness for two weeks and what researchers Dr Malik Shehadeh and Dr Emil Oweis noted as “unusually coloured stool”.
Pictures show the woman’s fecal matter had turned silver.
Doctors tested the faeces and found blood present. They performed an X-ray on her abdomen and pelvis and found cancer present in her liver.
They also found a “cecal mass” or a colorectal tumour.

It was determined the woman’s silver stool was caused by a combination of jaundice and black colouring in her faeces.
Jaundice can lead to stool turning white while the black colouring can be caused by medication.
Doctors discussed treatment options with her and she was released home with hospice care.
“After a discussion of treatment options with the patient, a decision was made to focus on her comfort,” researchers wrote.
