The secret royal children who won't have a right to the throne
As the child of a reigning monarch some things in life seem certain.
From palatial homes, aristocratic bloodlines and most notably the chance to one day take their place on the throne - an opulent existence seems part of the deal.
But for two of Prince Albert II of Monaco’s offspring, the latter of these outcomes is completely out of the question, and they will always be commoners.
The loophole affects the monarch’s eldest children Jazmin Grimaldi, 27, and her 15-year-old half-brother Alexandre Grimaldi-Coste.
This is due to both being born to women the prince never married - American Tamara Rotolo and Togo-born Nicole Coste respectively.
Instead, Prince Jacques, the four-year-old son of Albert and his wife, Princess Charlene, is the heir apparent to the tiny principality south of France.
The snub is due to Monaco’s succession laws specifying only ‘direct and legitimate’ descendants of Monaco's monarch or their siblings may inherit the throne.
As neither Jazmin or Alexandre’s mothers ever married their father, the prince, they are not in the line of succession to ever take over the throne.
However, don’t feel too bad for the blue-blooded duo.
Both are still set to inherit a sizeable portion of Prince Albert’s estimated $1billion fortune and were offered the choice to live and study near him in Monaco.
This comes after initial doubts about their paternity which saw the prince request DNA tests before he adopted the role of biological father.
For Jazmin, this meant a Californian childhood with her American real estate agent mother before she visited Monaco for the first time aged 11.
Similarly, Alexandre grew up in France with his mother Nicole, who dated the prince for several years after they met on an Air France flight she was working on.
But it took until his son was almost two years old for Prince Albert to claim paternity, despite already financially supporting the pair.
Fast forward almost 15 years and both Jazmin and Alexandre are reported to enjoy a close relationship with their father and his wife Charlene and their four-year-old twins Jacques and Gabriella.
Last year the prince and his eldest son enjoyed a photo op during Alexandre’s confirmation in London, while Jazmin, like her grandmother Grace Kelly, is an actress who regularly attends high profile events by her famous dad’s side.
