We're all trying to do our best to protect the environment and reduce waste. Whether you're rocking your favourite keep cup at your local cafe for your daily oat latte, taking reusable bags to the supermarket for your weekly shop or buying clothes from ops shops and re-sellers to reduce the devastating effects of fast fashion, there are loads of ways we can do our part.

When it comes to taking out the trash, it seems simple enough - red is for general waste, blue for paper and cardboard and yellow for mixed recycling, right? Well, apparently, many of us are actually getting this household task wrong.

“Rubbish disposal can be incredibly confusing and misleading, says Bernie Wiley, Sustainability Director at Who Gives A Crap. "While people may have good intentions, most are unfortunately disposing of their rubbish wrong. While it is best to reduce, reuse and recycle where possible, unfortunately, some rubbish is likely to end up in landfill."

From a sourcing and production perspective, recycled plastic that ends up in landfill has the least impact on the environment. It is for this reason, combined with ongoing customer demand, that Who Gives A Crap has launched a stylish new range of 100% Recycled Garbage Bags and Dog Poo Bags, as well as 100% Compostable Food Scrap Bags.

“It’s our role to help educate our customers on the best possible option for their household essentials. We’ve tried to simplify taking out the trash, with one bag for each purpose and end of life," says Bernie.

Not only does the new range make the often detested chore of taking out the bins a little easier, but it also makes it way more fun thanks to the irreverent designs on the bags. From unique designs, with bold colours and geometric shapes, the garbage bags will add some flair to your life while you'll feel great knowing you've made better choices for the planet.

"I limit my use of plastic garbage bags but find the fact that these are made of 100% recycled plastic appealing," was one customer's review. "As such they have become my product of choice when plastic garbage bags are needed. They are strong and easy to tie. Have also used them to carry wet swimming gear, and have re-used the same bag a number of times for this purpose - I like that they are strong enough to re-use. Love the colour, design and puns that symbolise Who Gives a Crap!"

In addition to being super fun, the garbage bags are also:

  • Leak and tear-resistant with easy tie handles

  • Available in 3 sizes to suit various garbage bins

  • Stretchy, sturdy construction to fit a variety of bin openings

The Dog Poo Bags - which come in packs of 200 - even include illustrations of different pups (too cute) and are designed to ensure that you never again face the horror of bending down to pick up your dog's dirty business only to find the bag you are using can't actually protect your hands from the steaming treat your bestie just left on the ground.

"These poop bags are really good quality, they are super thick so no nasty surprises on your fingers!!," one happy customer wrote of the doggy bags. "I find they are a good size, we have a 24kg dog and haven't ever had a capacity issue with them. They have handles which make tying easy. They come in quite a big box for poop bags, they are folded not rolled, so remember that if you usually use a roll holder!"

"Excellent quality! No chance of accidentally poking a finger through these poo bags! And they're pink!," another fan raved.

If you're into composting, the food scrap bags are the way to go. Crafted with plant matter to help minimise the impact on food systems, the bags are 100% compostable, come 60 to a pack and fit up to 12L compost bins. Being TUV Austria certified, these bags are both home and industrial compostable, breaking down within a year when composted at home, or within three months at an industrial composting facility.

One customer said that, although they had been sceptical about whether the bags would work in a home composting system, they had been super impressed.

"The size is convenient. I cold press juice and it will hold about 30 orange peels and a couple of night's dinners in the bag with no breaking," they said.

"Fit neatly inside our scrap caddies. Easy to open and tie. Importantly, it does not leak when transferring to compost heap or food bin!" another customer wrote.

Another fan described the bags as "perfect" and gave them 5 stars, writing, "Loved these compost bags. They are much more sturdy than the other bags I was using and don't leak so I'm not having to wash the bucket every time I empty it. Fits my kitchen compost container perfectly and they are easy to open, I don't struggle to get the opening apart! We produce a lot of scraps for our compost tumbler so it's great to have the large box of bags. Love them."

In addition to being an absolute hit with customers, Who Gives A Crap co-founder, Simon Griffiths is confident the new range marks an important step in achieving the brand’s mission of giving everyone in the world access to clean water and sanitation.

“We donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets all over the world and for us to have the greatest impact, we need to grow our product range," he says. "And what better way than adding new fun essential products people use every day.”
