Terri Irwin's emotional final promise to husband Steve Irwin before his tragic death
Terri Irwin has revealed her final promise to husband Steve Irwin before his tragic death in 2006.
Speaking in the trailer for Crikey! It's the Irwins: Life in Lockdown, Terri became emotional as she revealed Steve's final request.
"He said to me, if anything happens to me, just make sure Australia Zoo continues. So it is really important that we keep this going," she said.
It comes after reports the Irwins were struggling to keep the zoo afloat while it was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the clip, Terri tells her children, Robert, 16, and Bindi, 21: "We don't really know how long we will be shut down for.
"It might be another month, it might be another six months," she added.
Bindi said what they were all likely thinking: "I just keep thinking gosh, I just wish dad was here to help us out with everything."
Her mum agreed, saying: "He said to me, if anything happens to me, just make sure Australia Zoo continues. So it is really important that we keep this going."
Bindi is then heard talking about how much food they have for their animals due to the pandemic.
"We have enough food to continue on for about six weeks. But after that we are seriously going to be running out of funds."
Australia Zoo was closed in March and didn't reopen until June 12, with strict social distancing policies put in place.
When they reopened, Bindi took to Instagram to reveal how emotional it was for her.
"This morning we stood at the front of our home and opened the gates to visitors. I made a radio call to our entire Australia Zoo Crew that we had officially reopened which was one of the best moments of my life,” she said.
"For 78 days we have wondered if and when we would ever open our doors to guests again. The weight of the world seemed to press down on us as we worked hard to figure out how we’d be able to pay our bills. Caring for so many beautiful animals and our amazing team is our biggest priority."
Bindi continued: "Today I cried, a lot, as we welcomed everyone back into our zoological gardens. I cried as I felt the overwhelming joy of reopening and the stress these many weeks have brought. Thank you for your support as we work to create a magical experience for you and a safe space to unwind during these hard times. We’re all in this together.
