Sylvia Jeffreys gets the last laugh with new job
Sylvia Jeffreys famously lost her beloved newsreader job on the Today show at the end of last year, following her husband Peter Stefanovic’s controversial Ubergate scandal with brother Karl.
But despite being sidelined from the breakfast TV show and slated into an A Current Affair reporting gig, the 33-year-old seems to have actually come out on top.
Sylvia has signed on for another four years with Channel Nine, and says she’s “feeling very supported and encouraged” by the network.
“It can be hard to feel complete confidence in yourself when sands are shifting, but I’m thrilled Nine is backing me and showing that commitment to me,” she told Stellar magazine.
Explaining she’s quite “energised” in her new ACA role, she said she’s thrilled to have the opportunity to pursue long-form journalism on screen, which she wasn’t able to do when reading the news on Today.
Meanwhile A Current Affairs’ executive producer Fiona Dear proudly sang her praises for Sylvia, telling the publication, “She’s keen and caring and she’s bombarded me with story ideas, which is an EP’s dream”.
At the end of last year Sylvia, Peter and Karl Stefanovic were all booted from Today [Peter from Weekend Today], this move part of a complete overhaul for the breakfast program, which has been plagued by falling ratings for well over a year.
Her replacement was quickly announced as Tom Steinfort, while Deb Knight stepped into Karl’s hosting shoes and Brooke Boney took over as entertainment reporter.
The shift left both Sylvia and her husband of almost two years - who had been hosting Weekend Today - suddenly without their high profile roles.
But with her new contract signed on the dotted line, it looks like Sylvia has the last laugh.
