Susanna Reid has admitted that Ofcom’s ruling on Piers Morgan’s comments about Meghan Markle left her in an “awkward” position stuck in between her old colleague and her boss, ITV.

The broadcasting watchdog announced this week that it had cleared Morgan after remarks he made about the Duchess of Sussex on Good Morning Britain sparked a record number of complaints – and saw him step down from the show.

Speaking about the ruling, Reid said: “Let me just say, on the one hand, I've got my friend Piers Morgan and the other hand I've got my bosses, ITV.

"So this is obviously a slightly awkward moment right now."

The presenter described Ofcom’s decision as “very interesting”.

Morgan tweeted “Do I get my job back?” after the ruling was announced.

But while the broadcaster hasn’t returned to Reid’s side, she did share the screen with his wife Celia Walden on Thursday.

The writer was on GMB to discuss her new book Payday.

Morgan had teased her appearance by tweeting ahead of her interview: “I may not be on @GMB today… but my wife is about to be, with my ex-TV wife @susannareid100. This should be rather amusing.”

When Walden joined Reid on screen he shared a picture of them side by side with the caption “Wifeys” and a red heart.

Morgan left the ITV show in March after sparking more than 57,000 complaints when he said he did not believe claims made by Meghan in her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were among those to lodge a formal complaint.

Ofcom has now ruled that Morgan, 56, was "entitled to say he disbelieved" the royal couple and that "the restriction of such views would be an unwarranted and chilling restriction of freedom of expression".
