Fond farewell
Mel confirmed she was departing Channel 7 after 25 years with the network in August 2020, saying that she was “sad to be leaving”.
The newsreader, best known for her roles hosting Sunrise opposite David Koch for more than a decade and at the helm of Sunday Night for four years, made the announcement on her Instagram account.
“For half of my life I have called Channel Seven home and in that time I’ve had the privilege to share stories that mattered, meet incredible people and report on some of the greatest moments in history," she wrote.
“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done and so grateful to have worked with some of the very best in my industry," she added.
Throughout her more than two decades with the network, Mel held presenting and hosting roles on a wide array of programs including Today Tonight, Sunrise, 7NEWS and Sunday Night.
Sunday Night was axed in October 2019, leading to speculation about her future with the company, though at the time it was confirmed she would remain with the network in a ‘variety’ of roles.
Mel's final gig with Channel 7 was as host of The Latest. In a recent interview with The Australian Women's Weekly, Mel revealed that she and her husband, sports marketing executive John Dunlop, are focusing on their two teen kids right now.
