Stephen King Vows to Boycott Oscars Voting Amid L.A. Fires
Stephen King revealed that he would sit out voting for the 2025 Oscars as Los Angeles continues to burn from three major fires.
“Not voting in the Oscars this year,” the 77-year-old announced on the social media platform Bluesky.
“In my honest opinion, they should cancel them,” he added. “No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.”
Senior members of the Academy earlier shut down reports claiming that the March 2 ceremony has been canceled.
Leadership within the Academy and its broadcasting partner ABC believe the show must go on to help raise funds for relief efforts, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite that sentiment, the Academy’s 55-person governing board has extended the nominations voting window and delayed the nomination announcement from Jan. 17 to Jan. 23. It has also scrapped the annual Oscars Nominees Luncheon.
Hacks star Jean Smart has also urged television networks not to broadcast the opulent ceremony.
“I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
