"Not voting in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire," King wrote.

As commenters argued, however, canceling the show could actually do more harm than good.
"The workers had months, YEARS without pay due to covid, then to union negotiations. And now the fires. You're wrong in this one. Support the industry," wrote one person.
"Please reconsider. The Oscars are over a month away. I think by then it could be helpful to proceed with it. LA took a huge hit. The Oscars could be a vehicle to raise funds and lift spirits. The arts are important, both in good times AND bad," someone else pointed out.
"Going to disagree w/ you. They are not being held till beginning of March? It doesn't have to be over the top, but it does bring in revenue that the county/state could use. It also employs how many people during that time? As someone who's been through disasters, sadly the world doesn't stop," another fan chimed in.
Hacks star Jean Smart also shared a message with a similar sentiment to King's in an Instagram message on Jan. 9.
“With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters,” she wrote.
