Stephen Colbert Makes a Bold Political Statement Ahead of Upcoming Election

Stephen Colbert is issuing a bold political message ahead of the upcoming election—and he's not shying away from declaring where his loyalties lie this campaign season.

In a video clip from one of the talk show host's late night segments, he introduced his guest, current vice president and 2024 presidential nominee Kamala Harris, with a comical monologue.

"Good evening. It has been a tradition here at The Late Show since yesterday that the major party candidates sit down with me for an interview in October," Colbert opened as he sat on a stool with a 60 Minutes-inspired stopwatch depicted behind him. "We invited Kamala Harris to be our guest this evening, and she accepted. That interview, in a moment."

The host continued, quipping, "In the interest of fairness, we also invited former president Donald Trump to go f--k himself. He declined our offer," as the studio audience erupted into laughter and applause.

The snippet was shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Oct. 8, alongside the caption, "Stephen Colbert's opening of tonight's interview with Kamala Harris is going to get Donald Trump to lose his d--n mind. Holy hell."

Social media users flew into the comment section with reactions to the clip—which amassed over 3.5 million views in just two days—and Colbert's bold political move.

"The full clip is even funnier," one stated, referring to the initial news segment the spoof was modeled after, in which CBS announced that Trump had abruptly canceled his scheduled 60 Minutes sit-down.

"Could not appreciate & respect Stephen Colbert more," another admitted, as a third simply added, "Well said, Stephen Colbert well said."

"Colbert NEVER fails to deliver the goods," someone else chimed in, while an additional commenter attempted to theorize what Trump's reaction would be, joking, "Tomorrow morning 'I HATE STEPHEN COLBERT.'"

Another X user insisted the video was "Emmy material."

On the other hand, some weren't as amused, like one person, who called Colbert a "failed comedian," and another who declared, "Nobody watches that show lol."

The general election takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.
