What is Mexican Hot Chocolate?

Hot chocolate has deep Mexican and Central American roots linked to the Mayans' love for drinking chocolate infused with other spices and flavors. Traditionally, Mexican hot chocolate is made with milk, chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and chile powder. You can make your at home, but it's fun to be able to get a spiced and spicy hot chocolate when you're away from your kitchen, too, which is where this hack comes in handy.

How To Order Mexican Hot Chocolate At Starbucks

According to the Starbucks Secret Menu site (not affiliated with the coffee giant), for a grande Mexican hot chocolate, you should start by ordering a hot chocolate made with soy milk and no water. Ask for 1 1⁄2 pumps of mocha syrup, 1 1⁄2 pumps of white mocha syrup and 3 pumps of cinnamon dolce syrup, then politely ask your barista to add cinnamon powder to the soy milk while it’s being steamed.

For a tall Mexican hot chocolate, ask for 1 pump of mocha syrup, 1 pump of white mocha syrup and 2 pumps of cinnamon syrup. For a venti, go for 2 pumps of mocha syrup, 2 pumps of white mocha syrup and 4 pumps of cinnamon syrup. The results should be sweet and chocolatey with a hint of cinnamon. If that doesn't warm you up, we're not sure what will!
