‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition’ Score Reissued on Deluxe Vinyl

Four and a half decades ago, the “Star Trek” franchise explored a new frontier: motion pictures. The soundtrack to that journey is getting beamed back into the hearts, minds and hands of its fans.

On Nov. 15, Enjoy the Ride Records, in conjunction with Paramount Music, will release the 45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of composer Jerry Goldsmith’s score for “Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition.”

Restored, remixed, and mastered from first-generation multi-track masters by Bruce Botnick, Goldsmith’s longtime engineer and the original album executive producer, 80 minutes of music from Robert Wise’s inaugural big-screen update of the iconic television series will be pressed onto double 140-gram vinyl. Reissue label La-La Land restoration expert Mike Matessino coproduced the album with Botnick, coordinating the new release’s editing and track assembly. The pressing, which is limited to 1,000 copies across five color vinyl variants to be distributed across different online retailers, is housed in a rainbow foil-laminated gatefold jacket with a double-sided full-color insert.

“Star Trek: The Motion Picture” has long been one of the most fascinating and complicated entries in the series’ multimedia saga. First released in 1979, Robert Wise’s theatrical cut was subsequently expanded for a television version in 1983, before Matessino and producer David C. Fein, persuaded the filmmaker to create a director’s cut for DVD in 2001. However, the director’s cut was not fully restored and upgraded to high definition until 2022, when Paramount Home Video went back and updated the computer graphics to contemporary standards and fulfill Wise’s full vision of the picture. Those versions have impacted its critical reputation over the years, inspiring casual viewers and diehard fans alike to reevaluate its artistic merits — particularly ahead of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” widely regarded as the film series’ best entry.

Even so, Goldsmith’s score remains one of the franchise’s signature musical works. Its central theme later became the music to “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” making it almost as well-known as Alexander Courage’s original cues for the 1960s television series. This edition marks the second time Enjoy the Ride Records has released the director’s edition on vinyl, updating the packing and artwork to commemorate the film’s 45th anniversary.

The deluxe edition of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition” goes on sale Friday, Nov. 15 at 12:00pm ET. Enjoy The Ride and Light in the Attic Records will have exclusive color vinyl variants in the U.S., while and At The Movies will issue additional variants in Europe.
