New stamp set highlights history of Manx sea kings

A new six-stamp collection is set to highlight some of the Norse rulers in the Isle of Man's history.

The Age of the Sea Kings: The Medieval Kingdom of Man and the Isles, was created with Manx artist Juan Moore and Canadian professor Andrew McDonald.

Norse Kings depicted on the stamps include Godred Crovan, Godred Olafsson and Olaf Godredsson, who each ruled over the island during the period of 1079 to 1265.

General Manager for Stamps and Coins for the Isle of Man Post Office Maxine Cannon said the it was a period that continued to have a "profound effect on our island's culture, language and governance".

The fourth stamp in the set, depicting Rognvald and Olaf Godredsson has been chosen as the Europa stamp for 2025, representing national archaeological discoveries.

For about two centuries during the middle ages, the Isle of Man and the Hebridean islands off the west coast of Scotland were known as the Kingdoms of Man and Isles.

During the period, sea kings descended from Godred Crovan, who arrived on the island in 1079, dominated the seaways with their fleets of ships.

Artist Juan Moore said he had "always been fascinated by Vikings and their connection to the Isle of Man" and it had been a "joy and privilege" to work on the stamps.

Professor of History at Brock University Andrew McDonald, who provided the issue text and research to accompany the stamps, said it had been "inspiring to see Juan Moore's evocative artwork bring the period to life".
