“Sonic the Hedgehog” speeds past “Mufasa” at the box office, “Nosferatu” continues spooky streak
While "Sonic" took a victory lap at the domestic box office, it was "Mufasa" who won big at the global box office.
The battle at the box office between Sonic the Hedgehog and Mufasa wages ever onwards.
While Barry Jenkins' Mufasa: The Lion King may have taken the top spot on Christmas Day, it was Sonic who ruled over the domestic box office this weekend, earning an additional $38 million for a two-week total gross of $137.6 million. Inspired by the beloved Sega video game franchise, the third Sonic installment saw the blurry blue speedster and his pals face off against the mysterious Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves.
Still, the Lion King prequel kept Sonic on his toes, following closely behind with $37.1 million for an overall two-week total of $113.5 million. The latest of Disney’s photorealistic animated features, Mufasa: The Lion King tells the origin story of Simba’s father (Aaron Pierre) and explores his complex relationship with his brother Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), better known as Scar.

At the global box office, however, Mufasa reigned supreme, taking home $77.1 million this weekend compared to Sonic’s $74 million. Mufasa also leads the charge globally with an estimated worldwide cume of $327.9 million, with Sonic calmly cruising in at $211.5 million.
While the animals are at play, Nosferatu continued its own silent successful streak, conjuring up an additional $21.1 million at the box office this weekend for a total of $40.3 million — just four days after it was released on Christmas Day. Directed by Robert Eggers, the gothic horror film sees newlyweds Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) and Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) haunted by the treacherous, blood-sucking Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard).
In addition to the top trio, the Ariana Grande- and Cynthia Erivo-led Wicked earned an additional $19.4 million at the box office, coinciding with the musical’s new sing-along screenings that began on Christmas Day.
Moana 2 also kept afloat this weekend, earning $18.2 million as its titular Disney heroine (Auli'i Cravalho) embarked on a brand new adventure with her friend Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).
