Sofia Carson's new romantic comedy had an unexpected effect on test audiences. Well, maybe not totally unexpected.

The Purple Hearts star plays Alex Rose, a young woman who finds herself at a crossroads in writer-director Adam Brooks' rom-com The Life List (out Friday on Netflix). When her beloved mother, Elizabeth (Connie Britton), dies, Alex is stunned to discover that she added an unusual stipulation to her will. If Alex wants to receive her inheritance, she must first check off all the goals on her childhood bucket list. This "life list," which Alex put together when she was just 13, includes objectives like doing stand-up comedy and "going all-out in a mosh pit."

But the last item on the list, "find true love," proves to be elusive. Fortunately, her late mom passed along a set of questions to help her find the one: Is your partner kind? Do they help you become your best self? Can you picture them as the parent of your future child? These questions, it turns out, were so effective that some test audience members broke up with their boyfriends after considering them, Carson tells Entertainment Weekly with a laugh.

"Adam would call me all the time after test screenings, and he would say that there were so many people that would [tell him], 'I ended up breaking up with my boyfriend,' or 'I ended up changing or quitting my job,'" says the star, noting how the movie helped raise "all these existential questions."

"That's the beauty of this film," she adds of the feature, which is equal parts coming-of-age story and family drama. "It's so much more than a rom-com."

The actress was so inspired by the "profound" experience of working on the film that she's now working on her own life list. "I think so many of us, including myself, tend to forget the little girl that was a fearless dreamer," she says. "This movie took me back to her in so many ways. I left that set a different Sofia that I think little Sofia would be so deeply proud of. I've been writing my own 'life list' recently, and it was beautiful to see a few of the things that I dreamt of have come true." Become a UNICEF ambassador? Check. "Little Sofia would just be over the moon," Carson adds. "So many of the things that have happened in my life weren't even on my list because it's greater than I could have dreamt. Even playing Alex Rose is something so beautiful to me."

The Life List hits Netflix on Friday.
