Social media star accused of selling used free products in $90 advent calendar

With the festive season fast approaching, many will be on the hunt for the perfect advent calendar whether it be beauty, lifestyle or a good ol’ chocolate one.

One social media star who goes by the name Eltoria, recently put up an advent calendar with 12 doors – for the 12 days of Christmas – for sale on her website with the hefty price tag of £50 ($90).

While the calendar included her own brand candle, the YouTuber – who has 155k followers on the site – has been accused of including unsealed makeup brushes, lip balms and lipsticks in it, which all came wrapped in brown paper.

Not only that, some who purchased the calendar have claimed Eltoria included items she received as PR gifts.

Slammed by fans

Fellow YouTuber Soon-To-Be Wilson reviewed the calendar, showing a dried up lip balm that allegedly came in the calendar.

She expressed her concern for the lack of a seal on the lip balm, questioning the “hygiene” of the product.

Others have taken to Twitter to call out Eltoria for “breaking trading laws” by including PR items she received as gifts.

Following the backlash, the calendar has been pulled from her website and is no longer available for purchase.

Eltoria has since responded to the claims in a statement to Metro.co.uk.

“I would like to thank the customers for purchasing this handmade, very limited edition product,” she told the online outlet. “I would also like to thank my fans for the support.

“It is unfortunate that people have made guesses and assumptions for it then to be treated as fact.

“Perhaps this is an issue that platforms need to figure out how to regulate.”

Zoella advent calendar

Last year, beauty vlogger Zoe Sugg – previously known as Zoella – came under fire for selling a £50 advent calendar which many claim came filled with “cheap tat”.

The calendar, which was called the ‘Zoella 12 Days of Christmas Advent Calendar’ was sold at UK shop Boots and contained a cookie cutter, a key ring and a pen.

Also included behind the 12 doors of the calendar is a 130g candle, confetti, a bauble, 30ml room spray, a jotter pad and stickers.

People took to the Boots website to slam the product and Zoella for “getting away with selling this rubbish”.

Boots eventually reduced the product price by half and claimed the price of the advent calendar was set by the manufacturer or the supplier.

Taking to her YouTube channel, Zoe defended the part she played in creating the product and claimed it was up to Boots to decide how much they charged for it.
