  • Growing up, the Thompson sisters always watched Father of the Bride parts I and II together

  • The three saw a unique opportunity to recreate one of their favorite scenes from the second film with Melissa and Moriah both pregnant at the same time

  • The trio of sisters expected their video, part of a fun tradition, would be a hit with family and friends but never expected it would go viral

Three sisters seizing on the opportunity to share a good laugh ended up going viral for a silly but solid recreation of a great scene from a '90s hit film.

Moriah Kornoski, Melissa Johnson and Meghan Thompson are three sisters who grew up together in Virginia but are now spread around the country. They had some very special reasons to get together earlier this year, which provided the perfect opportunity for a fun moment between sisters.

"Growing up, we watched the Father of the Bride movies — both part one and part two — just a lot. Steve Martin and Martin Short are hilarious in their chemistry together. It was one of our favorite movies and we would quote it all the time," Moriah explains to PEOPLE.

"There are certain scenes in each movie that are core memories for us, and the workout scene from Part II is one of them. So when I found out I was pregnant and then we found out Melissa is nine weeks behind me, we knew we had to do it."

The scene the sisters decided to recreate features Martin Short as Franck, coaching Annie (Kimberly Williams Paisley) and Nina (Diane Keaton) through a workout while both daughter and mom are pregnant.

"We were like, 'Okay, all three of us are going to be together [for a baby shower] in Virginia for a couple of days. We could recreate this scene. This would just be so fun. We're both pregnant. Meghan can impersonate Franck — it would be awesome," Moriah recalls.

The sisters admit that they're not always able to pull off the hilarious ideas they come up with as Meghan says, "For this one, I did not think it was really going to happen."

"I was like, 'We're going to get there. The shower is going to go longer than what we all think. We were all on a pretty tight schedule for leaving. There's no way this is going to happen, with these two pregnant women? This is not happening,' " she says.

"Then when we get there and these two pull out their body suits, I was like, 'Oh, this is happening. We're doing this today.' "

The sisters watched the video together and got to practicing in the basement of their godparents' home. As they did, "Melissa could not keep it together," Meghan says with a laugh.

"I was dying," Melissa says of her demeanor throughout the handful of takes they filmed. "This was just something we did for fun and it was really fun. I was just giggling the whole time. I kept spinning the wrong way, so we would have to do re-takes because we weren't in unison. But Meghan had the hardest part because she had to lip-read Franck, and so she had to get the words down, but she did great."

The three were cheered on by friends and family who stuck around after Moriah's baby shower to witness the sisters in action. The sisters credit Meghan's vlogging partner, Candice, for helping film and edit the masterpiece.

"While we were watching for the dance moves and lip syncing pieces, she was watching for how it was filmed and when to zoom in/out, and then edited it to overlay with the original," Moriah explains.

After many laughs and many takes, they got their finished product and were excited to share it with family and friends.

"We knew our friends and family would find it entertaining. Ever since we were little, we've done family lip sync competitions, some through our church. What was funny was that a lot of the folks who were watching were like, 'Oh, those Thompson girls. Here they go again, back to their roots of doing these ridiculous lip-syncing type things,' " Meghan explains.

"That's why it felt so fun and natural for us to do, because it's part of our family culture," Melissa notes. '"We love to be theatrical, a little dramatic and embracing the cheesiness of '90s movies."

"We were only planning on friends and family seeing it. But being able to let the world see a little bit of a sneak peek of our sister bond that we have now and then receiving a lot of love back from the world has been really, really cool."

What the trio didn't expect was the video to amass thousands of likes and millions of views.

"Meghan was looking at the stats and she's like, 'Oh gosh, we're getting a lot of traction on this video,' " Moriah says. "It was fun because we would cheer at each big milestone. It was wonderful to be able to reminisce on such a fun moment, making this video."

Meghan adds, "The comments were like, 'We have found our people. Those are the same quotes we quote in our family.' It was such fun '90s nostalgia from folks who were like, 'Yeah this is our favorite thing too.' "

"So many women were tagging friends and siblings like, 'Oh my gosh, we should have done this!' It was cool to see how many people appreciated that we did it," Moriah says.

"Growing up, the character that Steve Martin plays reminded us so much of our dad, or even just how their culture was similar to our family culture," Melissa points out. "It's been a really fun thing to watch and a fun part of our family dynamic."

Meghan feels the moment resonated with so many because "the movies have stood the test of time."

"We've continued to watch them. When Melissa had her daughter almost five years ago, we all watched part two in the labor and delivery room the night before," Meghan shares.

"Then Moriah, we watched part two with her as well when Josephine was just born. With our weddings, we watched the first one. Now it's become a tradition with these milestones as we get older too."

For Meghan, it's become a fun home for a lot of sentimental milestones between the sisters.

"In the first movie, there's a part where Steve Martin envisions Annie in pigtails even though she's standing there as an adult. It's kind of like that. We're adult women now, but we're also still these three kid sisters that have this bond we share. Watching that play out now as adult women has been really fun and sharing it feels like an extension of family and that togetherness."

The moment was extra sweet for Moriah, particularly as the youngest of the three.

"Megan and I are eight years apart, so there's a four-year gap between each of us. Growing up, I was in elementary school while she was in high school, and Melissa was in middle school. So even though we were close growing up, there still also was this social divide, because a 16-year-old doesn't want to hang out with her 8-year-old sister all the time," she says.

"As we've gotten older, we've gotten even closer and made more of these amazing memories. It's really cool to feel that age gap kind of disappear. Our unit of sisterhood has just gotten stronger and stronger."
