Simon Fisher-Becker, “Harry Potter” and “Doctor Who” actor, dies at 63

Simon Fisher-Becker, a British actor who appeared in popular fantasy franchises like Harry Potter and Doctor Who, has died at age 63.

Fisher-Becker's manager confirmed his death in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. "Today, I lost not only a client Simon Fisher-Becker but a close personal friend of 15 years standing," Kim Barry of Jaffrey Management wrote. "I shall never forget the phone call I made to him when he was offered the part of 'Dorium' in Dr Who. He had been a fan of the show since he was a child. Simon was also a writer, a raconteur and a great public speaker. He helped me out enormously and was always kind, gracious and interested in everyone. My condolences go to his Husband Tony, his brother, nieces and nephews and his legion of fans."

A cause of death was not given. Fisher-Becker's husband Tony also confirmed the actor's death in a Facebook post on Sunday, March 9. "I have some very sad news," he wrote. "At 2:50 this afternoon Simon passed away."

Fisher-Becker was known for his role in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the 2001 film that marked the first entry in the cultural phenomenon. As Fat Friar, he was one of several friendly ghosts who roamed the halls at Hogwarts.

He also starred in a few Doctor Who episodes as Dorium Maldovar, a character who sells black market items and assists the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith.

Fisher-Becker got his start with the TV feature An Ungentlemanly Act in 1992. His most recent role was in the 2023 movie Disaster Dates 2, but he had several titles listed in production and post-production on his IMDb page. He also appeared in the 2012 Oscar-winning adaptation of Les Misérables.
